France World Cup Disaster

The embarrassment that was World Cup 2010 for the French national team continues to grow. After being the talk of the tournament for all of the wrong reasons, the French players arrived home to a chilly reception on Thursday. Police had to be on the scene to protect the players and coaching staff from the media blitz.

Following a heart breaking shoot out loss in the final match just four years ago, the 2010 campaign was a complete disaster for France. After a disappointing draw in their opening match against Uruguay, things went from bad to worse with consecutive losses to Mexico and host nation South Africa. The wheels came off after the Mexico loss, when striker Nikolas Anelka was dismissed from the team and the training coach resigned after a bust up with team captain Patrice Evra, causing the team to refuse to practice after the astonishing sequence of events.

The French  soccer fiasco is taking an increasing political turn back home in France, with the leading sports daily L’Equipe calling it  “A State Scandal.”

French President Sarkozy has vowed to personally investigate the matter. He met with prime minister Francois Fillon and sports minister Roselyne Bachelot on Wednesday to discuss ways to reform French soccer.
