On Monday, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders official announced his support for bringing the World Cup to San Diego. The news conference about the city’s efforts comes after news made its way around town discussing City Council’s consideration of being a possible host for the international event. The Mayor urged San Diegans to sign the official online petition which needs fifty thousand signatures.
As we first reported, the petition would list Qualcomm Stadium as the San Diego venue which would host four to six World Cup soccer matches if the USA were to be awarded hosting rights in either 2018 or 2022. In such a circumstance, the host city stands to create upwards of 8,000 jobs and $500 million in tourist revenue, not to mention worldwide visibility in 412 countries around the world.
As always, Soccer Fanatic will keep you up to date on any news that surfaces regarding the USA and San Diego World Cup bid.
What’s the deal with people..? We have an opportunity to bring the most amazing sport to our own backyard, and we’re lacking massive amounts of signatures. It would be wonderful if San Diegans would put forth the very little time and very little effort it takes to bring the worlds most famous sport here among us. Encourage all the people you know that share our love for the game, to sign the petition and get the ball rolling to bring the World Cup to San Diego. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
This seems like a no brainer. San Diego is a great city and the World Cup would offer so many jobs and bring in some much needed money to the local economy. I have been a fan all my life and would love to see the world’s biggest event in my backyard
